The coins are dedicated to the 150th birth anniversary of Ivan Franko, an outstanding Ukrainian writer, publicist, public and state figure, doctor of philosophy. His talent as a creator went far beyond the scope of the national interest: he wrote his works in Ukrainian, Polish, and German. Poetry prose, dramatic composition, scientific works, journalism – in all these fields Ivan Franko achieved perfection. His contribution to the development of the Ukrainian publicism, study of literature and theatre science is invaluable.

On the coin obverse above (on the left) there is the small National Emblem of Ukraine, in the centre there is depicted a mason splitting a rock, below there is the coin issue year – 2006, around the coin circumference there are inscriptions: on the silver coin: НАЦІОНАЛЬНИЙ БАНК УКРАЇНИ (National Bank of Ukraine) (above), П`ЯТЬ ГРИВЕНЬ (5 Hryvnias) (below), as well the indication of the metal, its fineness and its weight in fineness. On the coin there is also the NBU Mint logotype

On the coin reverse there is depicted a portrait of Ivan Franko, on either sides of which there are fragments of the stone rock and inscriptions: ІВАН ФРАНКО (Ivan Franko) (on the left) and his years of life – 1856/ 1916 (on the right).
