Description

Dmytro Bortnianskyi

This coin celebrates the 270th anniversary of the birth of the famous Ukrainian composer, choral conductor, music teacher, reformer of sacred music, and one of the founders of the classical music tradition – Dmytro Bortnianskyi. Bortnianskyi composed operas, choral, symphonic, chamber and instrumental works, in which musical themes from Ukrainian folk songs are reflected. His church-vocal style was a pinnacle of the art at the time, and his work influenced the development of Ukrainian music in the subsequent centuries.

Obverse: there is the following stylized composition: against the backdrop of Baroque floral elements is hand-written sheet music, above which are six-winged seraphim, symbolizing the grandeur of the composer’s spiritual music and his striving to come close to the divine; beneath, against a smooth background, is the legend УКРАЇNА (Ukraine), below which is Ukraine’s small coat of arms; to the left of the coat of arms is the coin’s face value – 2 and the graphical symbol of the hryvnia; to the right of the coat of arms is the coin’s issue year 20/21; beneath, to the right, against a smooth background is the mint mark of the NBU’s Banknote Printing and Minting Works.

Reverse: against a smooth background is a portrait of Bortnianskyi, to the left of which, against a matt background are the vertical legends: 1751/ ДМИТРО/ БОРТNЯNСЬКИЙ/ 1825 (1751/ Dmytro/ Bortnianskyi/ 1825).
