The coin is dedicated to a mammalian of cetacean species, a representative of the dolphin family in the fauna of Ukraine, a narrow-areal relic subspecies, the habitat of which is the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov. Azov Dolphin is on the endangered-species list of Ukraine and into the European Red-List.
On the coin obverse set in the wreath made of images of plants and animals there is engraved the small National Emblem of Ukraine and a legend: on the coin made of German silver there is an inscription: УКРАЇНА, 2, ГРИВНІ, 2004 (Ukraine/ 2/ hryvnia/ 2004), as well as the logotype of the NBU Mint is depicted
On the coins reverse there are two Azov Dolphins are depicted with air bubbles in the water, beneath – there is a seaweeds and circular inscriptions: АЗОВКА (Azov Dolphin) (right) and PHOECENA PHOECENA RELICTA ABEL (left).
