The commemorative coin is dedicated to the 130th anniversary of birth of Mykola Strazhesko (1876 – 1952), a scientist in the field of medicine, who was the founder of the national cardiology. Mykola Strazhesko was one of the initiators of the contemporary IInstitute for Cardiology of the Ukrainian Academy of Medical Sciences, which is mostly engaged in clinical and experimental researches. His atlas and study guide for haematology have been invaluable contributions of the scientist and the co-workers to the development of treatment for the deseases of hematopoietic organs.
On the coin obverse a semiabstract heart with vessels is depicted against the background of a circle with the circumscription – ІНСТИТУТ КАРДІОЛОГІЇ ІМЕНІ М.Д.СТРАЖЕСКА (M.D.Strazhesko Institute for Cardiology), above there is the Small National Emblem of Ukraine, to the right there is the semicircular inscription: НАЦІОНАЛЬНИЙ БАНК УКРАЇНИ (National Bank of Ukraine; beneath – 2 ГРИВНІ 2006 (2 hryvnias 2006), as well as the logotype of the National Bank of Ukraine Mint; to the left there is a vertically oriented composition of drops and names of the medical science sections.
On the coin reverse M.D.Strazhesko is potrayed, to the left there are the vertical three line inscriptions: 1876 – 1952/ АКАДЕМІК/ М.Д.СТРАЖЕСКО. (1876 – 1952/ Academician/ M.D.Strazhesko).
